Bracketing effects in categorized survey questions
نویسنده
چکیده
In households surveys, quantities of interest are frequently elicited using categorized (range-card) formats rather than open-ended questions. One advantage of this format is that it typically reduces item non-response. Unfortunately, results from research in social psychology suggest that the choice of bracket values in range-card questions is likely to influence responses. Not much is known about the influence of bracketing effects on the measurement of economic quantities and regression analysis. Based on data from controlled survey experiments, this paper shows that bracketing effects exist in interval data obtained from household surveys and that they are of significant size. I also discuss strategies for limiting bracketing effects in range-card questions and for developing valid econometric models for biased interval data.

Bracketing in Phenomenology: Only Undertaken in the Data Collection and Analysis Process?
Our aim with this article is to demonstrate how the researchers use bracketing as a method of demonstrating the validity after initiating a phenomenological study. Although bracketing is a method of demonstrating the validity of the data collection and analysis process in most phenomenological studies, how the researchers use them in practice is rarely demonstrated explicitly. We collected data...
متن کاملBracketing effects on risk tolerance: Generalizability and underlying mechanisms
Research has shown that risk tolerance increases when multiple decisions and associated outcomes are presented together in a broader “bracket” rather than one at a time. The present studies disentangle the influence of problem bracketing (presenting multiple investment options together) from that of outcome bracketing (presenting the aggregated outcomes of multiple decisions), factors which hav...
متن کاملChoice Bracketing and Construal Level Theory: The Effects of Problem Representation and Mental Representation on Sequential Risk-Taking
Two important theories in intertemporal choice are choice bracketing and construal level theory (CLT), but their relationship to each other is unexplored. Broad bracketing (considering many choices in a sequence) may induce a more holistic approach to decisions, suggesting overlap between choice bracketing and CLT. We attempt to integrate the theories and distinguish their effects on risk-takin...
متن کاملTransformation-based Bracketing: Fast Algorithms and Experimental Results
Abstract : In this paper we present an empirical study of transformation-based error-driven learning applied to the bracketing of sentences. We introduce a series of fast algorithms we have developed to learn bracketing rules; these algorithms allow rapid learning of rule sequences and are a significant improvement over previous transformation-based learning algorithms. We describe systematic e...
متن کاملThe Effects of Bracketing in Wealth Estimation
The use of bracketing in wealth surveys is sometimes criticized on the grounds that it will encourage respondents to substitute rough guesses for careful thought. In such a manner, the use of bracketing will “crowd out” more specific answers, creating the illusion of a reduction in nonresponse. This paper examines the patterns of wealth response in the first two waves of the Health and Retireme...
